It's called 99 Designs, and the concept behind it is called "crowdsourcing," which brings together groups to solve a specific problem.



Here's how it works on 99 Designs. Someone like me—a freelancer, an author, a business owner—needs something custom designed, such as a logo, book cover, brochure. By going to 99 Designs, the customer (or "crowdsourcer") can call on the talents of dozens of graphic designers from around the world, simply by posting a design brief in a "contest" and selecting a winning design at a preset rate. (99 Designs handles the payment and communications pieces of the interaction.)

As part of building my freelance business, I am building my online presence through my website (still under construction) and social-networking sites, such as LinkedIn and Twitter.
